The physics of stone skipping
نویسنده
چکیده
The motion of a stone skimming over a water surface is considered. A simplified description of the collisional process of the stone with water is proposed. The maximum number of bounces is estimated by considering both the slowing down of the stone and its angular stability. The conditions for a successful throw are discussed. © 2003 American Association of Physics Teachers. @DOI: 10.1119/1.1519232#

Physics of Elastic Spheres Skipping on Water
It is well known that one can skip a stone across the water surface, but less well known that a ball can also be skipped on water. The Waboba R © is an elastic ball used in a game of aquatic keep away in which players pass the ball by skipping it along the water. We investigate the physics of skipping elastic balls to elucidate the mechanisms by which they bounce off water. High speed video rev...
متن کاملTheoretical Limits of Stone Skipping
A simplified geometric model captures essential dynamics of stone skipping and allows easy computation of realistic stone trajectories under a variety of conditions. The model describes idealized collisions of flat, spin-stabilized stones with water, in which the water exerts sufficient reactive force on the stone to completely stall motion normal to the stone’s bottom surface. Motion parallel ...
متن کاملOptimization of Imaging Parameters in Micro-CT Scanner Based On Signal-To-Noise Ratio for the Analysis of Urinary Stone Composition
Introduction: Micro-CT scanner with a resolution of about 5 micrometers is one of the modalities used to create three-dimensional/two-dimensional images of urinary stones. This study aimed to optimize imaging parameters in micro-computed tomography (CT) scanner based on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of urinary stones for the analysis of stone composition. <stro...
متن کاملTheoretical and numerical approach to "magic angle" of stone skipping.
We investigate the condition for the bounce of circular disks which obliquely impacts on the fluid surface. An experiment [C. Clanet, F. Hersen, and L. Bocquet, Nature (London) 427, 29 (2004)] revealed that there exists a "magic angle" of 20 degrees between a disk's face and water surface in which the condition of the lowest impact speed necessary for a bounce is minimized. We perform a three-d...
متن کاملHydrogen Peroxide Adsorption on Graphene with Stone-Wales Defect
To explore the possibility of using graphene based biosensor, adsorption of hydrogen peroxide on graphene has been investigated using density functional theory. The electronic properties of defect free and defective graphene in the presence of different number of hydrogen peroxide have been studied. The graphene with the most stable configuration defect named as SW defect is considered. The hig...
